Application Problem: As electronic housings get smaller and more components are being put in them, the required cross-sections have become very small. The smaller cross-section gaskets are difficult to install because there is no means to hold the gasket in its desired place, i.e. matching the contour of the adjacent housing or compartment. These thin gaskets tend to fall out of position prior to assembly. In order to retain the gaskets in their place, conductive adhesives are used to bond each flimsy gasket to the adjacent housing or compartment. This task is labor intensive and increases the cost of the equipment being assembled.
Innovative Solution: The Tecknit solution is an electromagnetic shielding gasket(10) which has a relatively rigid shape-retaining insert embedded in the conductive elastomer. Both the insert(11) and the surrounding material(12) are made of material which is electrically conductive to insure electrical continuity throughout the gasket. The relatively rigid insert maintains the gasket in the desired shape to facilitate quick drop-in installation. The innovation saves money by greatly reducing installation time and reducing maintenance as the electronic enclosure is opened and closed.
Benefits:
The conductive elastomer can be filled with a variety of
conductive fillers depending on the shielding effectiveness
required, galvanic compatibility, environmental concerns
and cost.
The gasket can be formed into a variety
of shapes and sizes.
The gasket can be produced
in high volume for commercial applications via injection
molding. ![]() |
